After coming out clean,
I quietly closed my suitcase, grabbed my laptop and work gear, and left without slamming the door or making a scene.
Behind me, as I walked away, I heard Daria’s confident laugh.
“He’ll come back,” she told Marc.
But I already knew what the consequences would be. When they were due to make their next scheduled payments, they would try to withdraw money that was no longer there.
I spent my first night in a budget extended-stay hotel. The bedding was scratchy, and the refrigerator hummed loudly all night.
But I slept more soundly than I have in months.
It wasn’t the comfort of the room that helped me fall asleep. It was the complete absence of constant anxiety.
Taking Back Control
The next morning I did all those practical things that people always say they’ll do “later,” but never find the time to do.
I changed all my passwords: my payroll password, my bank password, my email password, and my company cloud storage password.
I enabled two-factor authentication for everything important. I called my company’s HR department and verified that my direct deposit had been updated correctly.
I made sure that no one else would have access to my payment information.
I then printed three complete monthly bank statements, which clearly show repeated transfers of $1,300 to Daria’s account.
Around noon my phone literally exploded with messages.
Marco: “Why is the account empty?”
Daria: “WHAT DID YOU DO?”
Marco: “Call me now.”
Daria: “You can’t rob us!”
Their Reaction
I stared at the messages, almost awed by the confidence it takes to accuse someone of stealing your money.
I called Marco back. Not because I owed him an explanation, but because he was my brother.
I wanted to make one thing absolutely clear.
“Marco,” I said calmly, “I didn’t steal anything from you. I transferred my salary to an account Daria no longer has access to.”
He seemed nervous and upset.
“Daria says you didn’t leave anything in our account.”
“You mean I stopped contributing to his expenses?” I replied. “That’s not the same thing at all.”
He exhaled sharply, trying to process it all.
“He told me it was the rent you agreed to pay.”
Reveal the whole truth
“Then why didn’t you tell me about this before?” I asked. “Why did you set up automatic transfers as if I were just another bill to pay?”
