My Husband Put My Sick Mother on an Air Mattress and Said He Made the Rules, but What I Did Next Changed Everything

He said: I’m the man of the house.

He said it again.

The second time with the specific reduced conviction of someone who knows the phrase is not landing as it should.

I said: Gabriel.

I said: you are my husband. Not the man of the house.

I said: there is no man of the house in the sense you mean. There is a house that we bought together with our combined income and that we both own and that has my mother staying in it because she has cancer.

He said: I know she has cancer.

I said: then act like it.

He said: I do everything for this family.

I said: you moved a sick woman to a basement floor while I was away.

He said: I needed the room.

I said: for football.

He said: Danny.

I said: for football.

He said nothing.

I said: do you understand what I’m telling you?

He said: you’re angry.

I said: yes. I am angry.

I said: I am going to tell you something that I need you to hear.

He said: Sara.

I said: please listen.

He said: I’m listening.

I said: my mother is going to be here for as long as she needs to be here. The guest room is her room. The bathroom across from it is available to her at all times. If you want to watch football, you have a television in the living room.

I said: if you move her out of that room again, I am going to do something about it.

He said: do what about it?

I said: I haven’t decided yet.

He said: that’s not a very specific threat.

I said: it’s not a threat. It’s a description of what’s coming.

He said: Sara, you’re being dramatic.

I said: Gabriel, your sister-in-law has cancer and you put her on an air mattress in the basement for a football game.

He said: she’s your mother. Not my sister-in-law.

I said: yes. Exactly.

I said: she’s my mother.

I said: and she is in this house because I invited her.

I said: and you knew she was coming before I invited her.

I said: and you said fine.

He said: I said fine about her staying here. Not about giving her everything.

I said: Gabriel. What did you give her? You gave her a guest room that she would have used anyway and that she has not complained about once.
