A single yellow cab appeared four blocks away, its roof light glowing in the dark. I raised my arm, my fingers stiffening in the wind.

The cab pulled up to the curb with a squeal of wet brakes. I opened the door with one hand, sliding Maya onto the vinyl back seat first.

I climbed in beside her, pulling the door shut against the freezing wind. The heater inside the cab was blowing lukewarm air, but it felt like a furnace compared to the apartment.
