There was no reliable historical evidence proving that such a presence existed. Nevertheless, when the photograph was digitally enhanced, some people noticed what they believed was a resemblance between the faint face and descriptions of Maria. This interpretation gave the old story renewed attention, although researchers emphasized that resemblance alone cannot establish someone’s identity.
The family’s serious expressions also became part of the discussion. However, early portrait subjects commonly remained still and expressionless because of the technical limitations of early photographic processes. Their appearance therefore cannot reliably demonstrate that they knew anything about Maria’s disappearance.
The most important development came when researchers investigated the old property. During an archaeological examination, human remains were reportedly discovered beneath part of the foundations. The remains were associated with a young person, although determining their identity would require proper scientific analysis and historical documentation.
The discovery provided a tangible reason to revisit the village’s forgotten history. It did not, however, prove that the mysterious figure in the photograph was Maria or that the photograph itself contained anything supernatural.
Later examination of the enhanced image produced another intriguing detail. Depending on the restoration settings, the faint face appeared to change expression, with some observers interpreting it as a slight smile. Digital enhancement can sometimes emphasize patterns that were barely visible in the original material, making different interpretations possible.
