Few things are more unsettling than seeing yellowjackets repeatedly flying around your home. One or two may not seem like a big deal—but if you notice them returning day after day, it’s worth paying attention.
While many people believe their appearance is a sign of good or bad luck, the real explanation is usually much simpler.
Why Are Yellowjackets Visiting Your Home?
Yellowjackets are constantly searching for three things:
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
If your property provides any of these, they may keep coming back.
1. Sweet Foods and Drinks
Open soda cans, fruit, barbecue leftovers, and sugary snacks are major attractions.
Even small spills on a patio table can attract yellowjackets within minutes.
2. Garbage Bins
Trash cans containing food scraps are one of the most common reasons yellowjackets gather around homes.
Keeping lids tightly closed can make a big difference.
3. Hidden Nesting Spots
Yellowjackets often build nests in:
- Attics
- Wall voids
- Roof eaves
- Sheds
- Underground burrows
- Decks and porches
If you keep seeing them in the same area, there may be a nest nearby.
4. Water Sources
Bird baths, pet bowls, leaking hoses, and standing water can also attract these insects, especially during hot weather.
