Seventeen years old: it’s been a long time since Michael Davis was in the same room with his father. When he was eighteen and enlisted in the army, he heard Charles Davis utter the words that closed the door behind him: kicked out of the house, with only a sack and the cold prophecy that he would “come back to his knees when life broke him.”
But life didn’t break Michael. On the contrary, it taught him perseverance. He forged his own path, far from family judgment, gossip, and teasing. He kept to himself, until the day he attended his younger brother Eric’s wedding.
Something changed in the wedding hall, as if someone had suddenly turned down the volume. People turned, following him with glances. Some looked at him with curiosity, others with obvious irritation. Michael took a few steps and realized it wasn’t going to be an easy evening.
